Description
Thyroxine is a thyroid hormone that is formed by the condensation of two molecules of the amino acid tyrosine. Also called T4 hormone for tetra-iodothyronine, the thyroxine molecule has four iodine atoms and is structurally similar to another thyroid hormone, tri-iodothyronine or T3, which has three iodine atoms. Thyroxine is produced by the thyroid follicles. Thyroid hormones act on a wide range of organs. They tend to increase basal metabolic rate and oxygen consumption, which helps to produce heat. Thyroid hormones are involved in growth.
